NANNIE SMITH BERRY

Nannie Smith Berry was born in 1861. Her parents were Harry and Sallie Smith, they lived at Rock Castle.

When Nannie was only two, her mother and younger sister Tabitha died. Then she was raised by servants. Young Nannie went to a boarding school in Nashville but would return to Rock Castle for the summer.

At the age of 19, she married Horatio Berry and they made their home with her father at Rock Castle. She had three children while living there. Her father bought Hazel Path for them, she had two more children.

After taking residence at Hazel Path, Horatio Berry continued to acquire more land. All of their children went to the best of schools. Nashville's Berry Field was named after their oldest son Harry.

When her husband died, Nannie ran the 3,800 acre farm which covered much of the center of Hendersonville.

Nannie died in 1961 at the age of 100. Her daughter Sarah, donated the land to build our school named in her mother's memory. The school opened in 1963.

Now you know how Nannie Smith Berry Elementary School got its name!
