Welcome Back Message from the Cafeteria
As we begin another school year, our nutritious and well balanced meals will be available to your
children. Our meals are served as part of the total educational program at Nannie Berry Elementary.
Numerous studies have shown a positive relationship between good eating practices and learning in school.
This year we will be cutting down on fats, sugar, and salt. More products will be baked instead of fried.
Soybean oil will be used for all fried foods and there are many good substitutes for salt that do not change the
taste or quality of the food.
The cost for breakfast will be $1.50, and reduced breakfast$.30. We will serve breakfast from 8:15 to
8:40 a.m. The cost for lunch will be $2.35, and reduced lunch$.40. Milk and juice will be $.45, and ice cream
will be $.50. A menu will be sent home on a monthly basis so you and your child will know what will be
served each day. A salad/specialty bar was added to our line last year, and was a big hit with the children. We
will alternate a make your own pizza bar; pasta bar, soup and sandwich bar, hot dog bar, and nacho bar, for a
few examples, along with the hot line. Watch for the Specialty bar selections at the bottom of each day on the
menu. The children are allowed many choices so there is almost always something for everyone.
The Sumner County breakfast and lunch program is a computer automated system. Each student has
an account and each account has three categories (breakfast, lunch, and specialty sales). Prepaid meals are
encouraged. These are the directions to follow when prepaying: Send a check or cash in an envelope with your
child's name and teacher's name written on the envelope. Specify what category you wish to put money in,
and how much money you want in each category. An example for one $7.50 in breakfast, $11.00 in lunch,
and $2.50 in special sales (ice cream, etc). If a category is not specified all monies automatically go in lunch
and other items cannot be purchased. You may pay in advance, but please designate the category and amounts.
We try to have all accounts at a zero balance on the last day of school.
I would also like to encourage anyone who feels they may qualify for free and reduced meals to fill
out the application and send it in as soon as possible. If at any time during the year you experience financial
difficulty, come by and get an application. All information is totally confidential. If you qualify for free and
reduced meals, you must participate a minimum of 3 days per week in our lunch program in order to receive a
free wavier. If you have any questions, or need more information, please call (264-6006). The strength of our
school lunch program relies on your interest and support.
